Eugenia Marshall Hurley, 96, passed away Monday, June 6, 2016 at Cross Creek Health Care, Swan Quarter, N.C.
Born January 30, 1920 in Lake Landing, Hyde County, she was the daughter of the late Tom and Minnie Barber Saunderson. She was an only child and much loved by her family. Born into a family of Episcopalians, she was a member of St. George’s Episcopal Church where she was a Sunday school teacher and organist for several years. She grew up in a musical family and still played piano at Cross Creek in her 96th year.
A graduate of Engelhard High School, she attended East Carolina Teacher’s College, now East Carolina University, and briefly worked in the Newport News Shipyard and Hyde County Courthouse. Married to Cpl. Charles H. Marshall of Engelhard in 1944, she soon became a widow after he was killed in World War II in Luxembourg in 1945. Many years later she married Claude Hurley of Durham who also predeceased her. In the early 70s after Claude’s death, she came to live with her daughter in the Scranton area, later moving beside her.
Survivors include Carolyn Dunbar; her two grandsons, Chuck Dunbar and wife, Brooke and Todd Dunbar and wife, Karen; four great-grandchildren, Kayla Mizelle and husband, Reid, Katie Dunbar, Nathan Dunbar and Natalie Dunbar; two great-great-grandchildren, Ryder and Kora Reid; several nieces and nephews as well as her special friend, Bob Rusk.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday at Amity United Methodist Church at Lake Landing in Hyde County. Steve Bryan will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends on Thursday beginning at 12:30 p.m. at the church until the hour of the funeral and other times at the home of Carolyn Dunbar, 92 Goggle Eye Lane in the Ponzer Community.
