Girl Scouts host inaugural STEM event

Beaufort/Martin County Girl Scouts, a part of Girl Scouts-N.C. Coastal Pines, held its inaugural science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) event on April 16. The event was organized by Beaufort/Martin County Girl Scouts and was free and open to the public.

More than 300 people came out to Lawson’s Walk in historic Bath and enjoyed a morning filled with STEM, which is a big focus in schools and around the country. Girl Scouts today is trying to interest more girls in STEM fields and are gaining national attention for their efforts. Girl Scouts was mentioned as a leader in this movement in a recent article released by the White House.

Beaufort/Martin County Girl Scouts would like to recognize the Town of Bath, community partners and more than 50 volunteers who collaborated and made this a fun, educational and successful event.

Coastal Pines membership director for Beaufort, Martin, Northampton and Halifax counties), Sea Tow, ServPro of Bath, Debra Torrence, UNC-TV/PBS Kids, Wee Pirates Play Outside and Weyerhaeuser Reforestation Program for their participation and for promoting STEM to area children.

Beaufort/Martin County Girl Scouts looks forward to partnering with them again next year.

In the meantime, check out these other fun opportunities to get involved with scouting, sponsored by Beaufort/Martin County Girl Scouts: Teddy Bear Tea Party from 11 a.m. to noon on June 18 at the First United Methodist Church in Washington; Day Camp with Daisy (GS Mobile Learning Vehicle) on July 9 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the First Christian Church of Washington; Skating Party from 10 a.m. to noon on July 23 at Extreme Skate Park in Chocowinity; and four weeks of STEM sessions at the Brown Library of Washington to be held June 23, June 30, July 7 and July 14 from 3:45 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
