The Down East Seniors Club held its June 15 meeting at the Blind Center of North Carolina in Washington. President Ed Hamrick led the meeting. Jim Hackney played for the singing of “God Bless America,” and Charlie Mike Smith gave the invocation. Dick Paul provided humor.

Hutch Stage introduced Donna Burgin and Sue Nicholson, who told of their tour to Dubai and India in February. The middle-eastern city of Dubai was built in the desert and is very modern. It is a center of business and trade and has many large buildings, including the tallest skyscraper in the world. Visitors are welcomed, but to live there, one must be either born there or furnish proof of employment there. The majority of the tour was spent in India. They were very impressed by the friendliness of the Indian people, especially the poor. The Indian culture uses many bright colors in buildings and clothes; this reflects the people’s bright outlook. English is widely spoken and used on signs, a carryover from the colonial days. Pictures were shown of many beautiful buildings and natural scenes, as well as of the people.

Ed Hamrick won the 50/50 drawing.
