Complete effort pushes Washington past South Central

Washington’s baseball team has found plenty of success this summer. The Pam Pack has won shootouts and also completely dominated opponents. Monday saw the boys play one of their most complete games in some time, defeating South Central 10-3.

Matt Black and Cody Godley each scored in the bottom of the first, giving Washington an early lead at home. The Pam Pack batters were able to lay down some perfectly placed bunts. It helped establish the offense quickly as they stayed strong at the plate all evening.

“We laid some bunts down and just did some little things right. It set the tone for the rest of the game,” coach Kevin Leggett said. “We kept fighting, which is good. I like to see that from them.”

Washington scored in every inning but the third. Riley Davis patiently battled back from a 0-2 count to draw a one-out walk in the bottom of the second. Fredrick Holscher plated him by singling through the right side to give Washington a 3-0 edge after two frames.

South Central got a pair of hits and capitalized on two passed balls and an error to pull within one in the third. The visitors then retired the Pam Pack in order in the bottom of the frame. They again turned around and jumped on a few defensive miscues by Washington to knot the game at three apiece.

Washington wasted no time reclaiming its lead. Uriah Aaron singled back up the middle to give his side its first baserunner of the fourth frame. Davis and Matt Black then drew consecutive walks to load the bases with one out. Godley pushed across Aaron with a sacrifice-fly RBI to right field for what held up as the game-winning run and Davis came across thanks to a passed ball.

“I liked that because it keeps them on their toes,” Leggett said of his team’s quick answer. “Sometimes we hang around and try to wait until the last inning. They didn’t do that tonight. They went ahead and jumped back on, which helps deflate the other team a little bit.”

The Pam Pack bats stayed hot as the boys notched four hits to add on three more runs in the fifth. Tyler Harrell and Aaron both batted in runs. South Central gifted Washington its third of the stanza when Godley was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

Fredrick Holscher fields a ball at second and makes the quick throw to first. Washington’s work on the mound and the defense behind it was consistent in minimizing South Central’s offense.

Another pair of runs in the sixth put the game out of South Central’s reach. Meanwhile, Washington’s pitching staff and defense did an exceptional job limiting the opposition’s chances. Harrell worked the first four innings. Chris Sulc pitched the fifth and sixth, striking out two of the seven batters he faced.

Nick Everette quickly closed the door on South Central when he took the mound in the seventh. He induced a leadoff groundout before fanning the next two batters, sealing the win.

“Tyler jumped right in and did his job. Nick hasn’t pitched in a year and a half and that’s two games in a row he’s come in and looked really good,” Leggett said.

The defense behind them, barring a few mistakes, was strong all game. The infield made key plays in South Central’s two-run third inning, stopping the visitors from getting any closer. Godley made a strong stop on a hard ground ball toward the left side and nearly made the throw to first. Cooper Anderson robbed the next batter when he made a diving catch on a foul ball popped up near the backstop.

“They’re doing a good job. A lot of them are playing baseball six or seven days a week and some of them are going to football,” Leggett said. “I think that’ll keep them mentally prepared for next year and help them out in the long run.”

Washington will travel to South Central for a rematch next week.
