John Carl Mahoney

John Carl Mahoney, age 77, a resident of Ridgewood Circle, Washington, and a former resident of Plymouth, NC, died Thursday, June 30, 2016 at Vidant Pitt Medical Center after a brief illness. John was born April 14, 1939 in Meadville, PA, to the late Parker and Florence Woods Mahoney. He was a graduate of Meadville High School and later served his country in the United States Marines. On August 14, 1982 he married the former Virginia Sue Romack, who survives. John was the owner of Barber Mine and Timber until his retirement. After moving to Washington in 1991, he worked for Mason Lumber Company and the Beaufort Tax Assessors Office. John attended the Catholic Church and served on the board of the Broad Creek EMS and was a member of the Elks Club. In his spare time he enjoyed fishing, hunting and going to the beach. In addition to his wife, John is survived by one brother, Parker Mahoney of Kelseyville, CA, one daughter, Michelle Ellowitz of Acton, Massachusetts, three sons, Michael Mahoney (Brenda) of Uvalde, TX, Brett A. Mahoney (Kelly) of Murphysboro, IL, and Daniel P. Mahoney of Boise, Idaho, three stepchildren, Christina Smothers (Greg) “Pooch” of West Frankfort, IL, Amy Smith of Chocowinity, and Jake Crews (Mary Lou) of Goreville, IL. Also surviving are 9 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. A celebration of John’s life with Military Honors will be held at 10:00 am Tuesday, July 5, 2016 in the chapel of Hillside Funeral Service, officiated by PhD. Rev. A. Donald Wiesner. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at Hillside Funeral Service. Hillside Funeral Service & Cremations, 4500 Hwy 264 E., Washington, has been given the honor of being entrusted with serving the Mahoney family.
