Severe T-storms passing through the county

The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm alert for Beaufort County until 10:45 p.m.

Radar indicates a line of strong storms are moving southeast at 45 mph with wind gusts up to 60 mph. The storms reached Washington around 9:30 p.m. and reached Belhaven around 9:45 p.m. Large hail, damaging winds and cloud-to-ground lightning are possible.

NWS advises that damage to roofs, siding and trees is a possibility. Stay indoors if possible. If on the roads, watch for ponding water and potentially dangerous road conditions.

A particularly severe patch of storms was seen on the radar traveling in the Broad Creek and Ponzer areas, as well as on the other side of the river near Bayboro. Residents in these areas should be mindful of potentially hazardous weather conditions.

According to Tideland EMC, residents have reported scattered power outages in its coverage area. Residences on Possum Hill Road in Bath are experiencing outages.

NWS lifted the thunderstorm warning at 11 p.m., and the county is now under a thunderstorm watch until 12 a.m. Saturday.
