Seeking submissions for ‘A Carolina Christmas’
The Pamlico Writers Group has extended the deadline for “A Carolina Christmas,” an inspirational and family oriented anthology with a section devoted to competition winners. The new deadline is Aug. 1.
Pamlico Writers Group is seeking entries for a Christmas anthology (stories, essays and poems of Christmas in North Carolina) to be published for Christmas 2016. Any current PWG member in good standing may submit up to three prose and/or three poetry entries for selection by anthology jurors. The 2016 PWG adult and high school first-place competition winning entries will also be published.
This may be a chance for writers to have work published for free (or $25 for annual dues).
To join the group, visit pamlicowritersgroup.wildapricot.org/join-us/. To submit an entry, the following items are required: a biography file ready for upload; a head-and-shoulders photo ready for upload; up to three prose and/or three poetry entry files ready for upload.
Entries will be collected through Submittable.com, which requires those submitting work to create a free Submittable account (or an existing Submittable account) for identification of entries within their system.
Pamlico Writers Group launches mini-workshops
Pamlico Writers Group will be hosting mini-workshops on the normal third Tuesday meeting of selected months. The intent is to have a speaker present instruction on a topic of interest to writers. The workshop will last about an hour, leaving time for normal business and critiques.
Doris Schneider will present the first mini-workshop on book reviews — writing them for others, getting others to write them for you, how to use them, their significance in marketing your book and reviews through professional companies or not.
Doris was the original spark for the Pamlico Writers Group’s annual conference and has chaired the conference steering committee for the past five years.
Doris was born in Rosenburg, Texas, but moved all over the U.S. and Canada as a child. She moved to North Carolina in 1971, where she has spent most of her adult life.
She taught theater arts at William Carey University in Hattiesburg, Mississippi and at North Carolina Central University in Durham. She has written numerous articles for professional journals, a theater textbook (“The Art and Craft of Stage Management”) and two novels (“Borrowed Things” and “By Way of Water”). She is currently working on another novel, “The Little Drummer Girl,” and a collection of short stories.
Doris is one of five artist/owners of the Lemonade Art Gallery in Washington where she displays her handmade masks and jewelry.
Luncheon with publisher/CEO Diane Taylor
Mark the calendar and join the Pamlico Writers Groups to meet Diane Taylor, CEO of Taylor Made Publishing, at PWG’s luncheon meeting scheduled for 11:45 a.m. on Aug. 16 at The China Bay Buffet Restaurant in Chocowinity.
Taylor is a wife, a mother and an entrepreneur who earned a bachelor’s degree in broadcast/journalism from Morgan State University and a master’s degree in technical and professional communications from East Carolina University.
Taylor moved to North Carolina to pursue a career in public relations and public health in 2002, and after years as a certified substance abuse prevention professional, she authored “A Game of Faith — The Story of Negro League Baseball Player Carl Long.”
Self-publishing her book was the beginning of her latest business venture as the founder and CEO of Taylor Made Publishing. Taylor Made Publishing is a full-service book-publishing company that specializes in helping steer authors from manuscript to print. TMP offers everything from cover design, to copyright to ISBNs. Their job is to help everyday people tell extraordinary stories.
As owner of a multifaceted publishing house, Diane will share what’s involved, from start to finish, in finding a publisher and getting a book published. She’ll also be sharing what publishers are looking for in the artists/writers/authors they choose to contract with. In this day of vanity presses, she’ll also be giving us her frank assessment of what authors should look for before submitting their work.
Taylor’s blog can be found at www.chocolatemother.com. For more information about her publishing company, visit www.taylormadenc.com.
The free luncheon meetings are open to the public. Attendees should go through the normal buffet line and assemble in the private meeting room. Please be sure and leave a tip for your server so that we may reduce our facility costs.
Pamlico Writers Group public luncheon meetings are held the third Tuesday of each month except the following months: January, March, July, November and December.
Pamlico Writers Group is affiliated with Arts of the Pamlico and meets as small critique groups on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month at 7 p.m. at the Turnage Theatre. Novice and published authors are encouraged and invited to join our groups.
Pamlico Writers Group and Arts of the Pamlico co-sponsor the annual Pamlico Writers Conference and Competition. Conference information for 2017 is not yet available. Look for this and other events on www.pamlicowritersgroup.org, where those interested may join the group.
