Louise B. Howerin Sawyer

Louise Bonner Howerin Sawyer, 84, of Washington, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 2, 2016, at River Trace Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Washington, following a lengthy and courageous battle with Alzheimer’s Disease.

She was born January 12, 1932, in South Creek, NC. She was daughter of the late William Ottis Howerin and the late Elsie Mae Carrow Howerin. On September 29, 1950, in Chocowinity, she married Reuben Edward Sawyer Jr., who survives.

Mrs. Sawyer spent her childhood years in Beaufort and Hyde Counties NC and the Broad Creek Village area of Norfolk, VA. She was a 1949 graduate of Sladesville High School, Sladesville, NC.

She was a homemaker who spent most of her married life in Dare County, NC, prior to relocating to Washington in 2002. Mrs. Sawyer attended the Manteo Assembly of God Church in Manteo, NC for many years. She was a charter member of the Swan Quarter Pentecostal Holiness Church in Swan Quarter, NC.

Mrs. Sawyer was bookkeeper for R E Sawyer Jr. Construction Company for 17 years, prior to her husband’s retirement in 1990.

In addition to being a loving mother, she is remembered for her warm smile, infectious laugh, delicious desserts and intricate handwork. On more than one occasion she would sketch a dress and her daughter would be wearing a perfectly fitted version within a few days. She is missed.

She is survived by one daughter Dorothy Van Dyne of Washington and one son Philip Sawyer (and wife Marsha) of Manns Harbor, NC. She is also survived by her grandson Jason Sawyer (and wife Nicole) of Wilmington, NC.

A graveside service, conducted by Rev. Anthony Rouse, will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, August 6, 2016, at Belhaven Community Cemetery, US Hwy 264 E, in Belhaven, NC. The family will receive friends following the service at the cemetery.
