Mr. Clinton “Red” Shirtz

Mr. Clinton “Red” Casteel Shirtz, age 84, a resident of Summerland Key, Fla., died Saturday, June 25, 2011, at Beaufort County Medical Center.

Graveside services will be held Friday, July 1, 2011, at the Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly, Mich.

“Red” was born in Detroit, Mich., on Aug. 26, 1926, to the late Kenneth and Estella Maxwell Shirtz. He joined the United States Navy at the age of 17 and served active duty for two years as a gunner’s mate. He became a Detroit City Police officer, receiving an accommodation for rescuing a boy from a burning building. He remained with the force for 27 years until his retirement as a detective lieutenant. He moved to south Florida and worked for the Florida Atlantic University Police Department for the next 13 years.

Survivors include his loving wife; Mary Lou Shirtz of the home, two daughters; Lise A. Shirtz of Richmond, Mich., Rebecca L. Shirtz Franks of Washington, one grandson; Cullen Peter Shirtz of Richmond, Mich., and confidant and friend, Melton Everett of Washington.
