The members of the Rotary Club of Sandino, Nicaragua, were concerned when they learned that the wells providing water to more than 2,000 residents — including schools and clinics — were contaminated. The potential for a cholera outbreak was real. So they asked for a Rotary partner club to help with a Rotary Foundation Grant. The Rotary club of Santa Barbara answered the call. As an interim fix, club members partnered to provide locally manufactured ceramic water filters to more than 500 households, as well as the schools and health clinics. They also provided a team of eight “health promoters” to go around the neighborhoods to teach parents how to assemble, clean and maintain the filters. Next, they helped renovate the health clinics and provide hundreds of first-aid kits. Finally, they will eventually begin digging new replacement wells. A good example of Rotarians working together internationally to solve local problems.
