PotashCorp confirmed Tuesday that it is in preliminary talks with agricultural product company Agrium Inc. regarding a potential merger.

Officials remain tight-lipped about potential agreements and how a merger would affect PotashCorp plants.

“No decision has been made as to whether to proceed with such a combination, no agreement has been reached, and there can be no assurance that any transaction will result from these discussions,” a press release stated.

Ray McKeithan, manager of public and governmental affairs at PotashCorp-Aurora, said he must refer any questions to corporate offices, as he could not comment on the matter.

Randy Burton, director of public relations at PotashCorp’s corporate offices, declined to give any more details on the matter.

PotashCorp’s offices are based in Saskatoon, Canada, and Agrium Inc.’s corporate offices are based in Calgary, Canada.

PotashCorp is the largest crop nutrient company in the world, mining and producing potash, nitrogen and phosphate. Its plant location in Aurora has more than 800 employees.
