Clifton Alton Barnes, age 88, a resident of 329 E. 11th Street, Washington, died Thursday, September 8, 2016 at his home.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00pm Sunday, September 11, 2016 at Wesleyan Pentecostal Church in Washington and will be officiated by Pastor Daniel Woods. Burial will follow at Oakdale Cemetery.

Pallbearers include Jonathan Scott Barnes, Michael Alan Barnes, Matthew Joel Barnes, Seth Andrew Barnes, Steven Blake Ennis and Jordan Christopher Grady. Honorary pallbearers include Suzanne Wood Ennis and Sara Wood Grady.

Mr. Barnes was born in Wilson County, NC on February 1, 1928 to the late Charlie Bennett Barnes and Mary Daughbny Barnes. On January 21, 1950 he married Alma Gray Mercer. He worked for Swain Gas Company for over 50 years and drove a transport truck until he was 83 years old. Mr. Barnes enjoyed golfing and playing baseball. He played for the Wilson Tobbs for three years. Mr. Barnes loved to cut grass and he loved to work, especially for Swain Gas Company. He was a member of the Wesleyan Pentecostal Church of Washington.

Survivors include his wife, Alma Mercer Barnes, three children, Debbie Barnes Wood and husband Randy, Steve Alton Barnes and wife Cheryle, David Scott Barnes, seven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, one sister, Mildred Grant and several nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his siblings, Marvin Barnes, Melvin Barnes, J. B. Barnes, Irene Tedder, Elsie Barnes, Hazel Parker, Myrtle Barnes and a grandson, Bryan Lee Barnes.

The family will receive friends 6:00pm until 8:00pm Saturday, September 10, 2016 at Paul Funeral Home & Crematory of Washington.
