GREENVILLE — Youth football is underway. Saturday morning and afternoon featured plenty of games to kickoff the season.

The beginning of the 2016 campaign went well for the 10U Chocowinity Indians, but no so much for the 10U Washington Colts. The Indians had strong showings on all three sides of the ball en route to a 24-0 season-opening win.

The Colts’ defense got off to a hot start when Dashawn Smith made a tackle in the backfield on the first play of the game. TeQuan Moore and his fellow Indians running backs took over from there, though.

Jacori Blount ran eight yards into Washington territory, which Jones followed with a 26-yard dash into the red zone. He took the first-and-goal handoff and punched in a three-yard touchdown. Starkie notched the two-point conversion to give the Indians an 8-0 edge with 1:46 left in the first quarter.

The Colts went three-and-out, but were able to make a defensive stand on Chocowinity’s next possession. The Colts were again halted as run attempts by the likes of Rashad Little and Jamel Corey didn’t yield much.

The Indians got the ball with a minute left before halftime. They were set to kick off after the break, so the goal was to add to their lead before the break. It took them just two plays to do just that. Moore ran 18 yards to the 22-yard line, and Blount finished it off.

The Indians used a successful onside kick to get the ball back before halftime, but didn’t have time to capitalize. They did the same thing on the kickoff to start the second half. Blount and Gabe Kessnove both had third-down conversions before Blount scored on a 5-yard run.

The Colts continued to struggle picking up positive yardage. Trailing 24-0 in the fourth quarter, they went for it on fourth-and-12, but turned the ball over on their own 28-yard line.

Chocowinity took over with 1:38. The Indians didn’t make many plays before Washington’s Smith went down with an injury on the sideline. The clock ran down, and Chocowinity left the game with a decisive win.
