Sophia Jane Beacham Carter, 81, of Joe Mobley Road, Williamston, passed away on Saturday morning, September 17, 2016 in Greenville at Vidant Medical Center. She was born in the Macedonia community on February 2, 1935 to Carl Lee and Mary Frances Hadley Beacham, who preceded her in death.

After moving around the country with the military, Sophie and her husband returned to live in Bear Grass. She worked as a beautician at the Friendly Beauty Shop in Washington along with her mother and her sister. She was very active with the Pocahontas Society in Washington.

She is survived by her husband James M. Carter of the home, her son, Jim Carter and wife Annette, of Greenville, sister Millie Prettyman and husband Graham and brother Carl Beachman Jr. and wife Dalice of Bear Grass, and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial service will be held Thursday, September 22, 2016 at 11:00 AM at Macedonia Church of Christ, officiated by Minister Dolan Baker. The family will receive visitors at the home of Carl and Dalice Beacham at 4634 Joe Mobley Rd., Williamston.
