Photographs delving into the lives of animals both great and small are on display through October at Brown Library.

The work is by amateur photographer Sherry Conrad Frye. A Goldsboro resident, Frye has previously exhibited her photographs at the North Carolina Estuarium and various venues across the state.

“I just do this for fun, and I just like to share my work with people,” Frye said.

Frye calls herself an amateur artist and photographer. She said she used her move from Charlotte to Goldsboro as a way to reinvent herself, and with a background in communications, she has turned to photography as a form of expression for both herself and that of her subjects.

But it was during a recent memorial service, when the words “all things great and small” made a deeper impression while she was singing the hymn “All Things Bright and Beautiful,” that sparked the idea for the series. Compounded by the recent loss of her cat, Woody, it prompted Frye to begin photographing animals, capturing their expressive personalities and how animals live for the moment, she said.

“These photographs are trying to capture that particular moment in time,” Frye said. “These have so much meaning for me, and I hope that people get the meaning,”

A unique aspect of Frye’s work is that she does not digitally enhance any of her photos. Instead she relies on taking good photos with her simple point-and-shoot cameras.

“People just can’t believe that I don’t Photoshop them, and I’m like, ‘No, you can just take a good photo,’” she said.

Though Frye draws on photography classes she took at Appalachian State University, she does not limit her artistic skills to photography.

“I do photography, painting — painting on canvas, on furniture, bottles and clothing,” Frye said. “I kind of do a lot of things.”

In the course of returning to art, she’s had the opportunity to discover eastern North Carolina through the lens, as well as through the venues where her work is displayed, she said.

“It’s interesting because I’ve really gotten to explore a lot of small towns. It’s been very interesting on many levels,” Frye said.

Frye’s “All Things Great and Small” exhibit will be on display at the library until the end of October. Brown Library is located at 122 Van Norder St., Washington.
