Last week was a tough one for Beaufort County football as local teams went 0-4. Washington dropped two games to fall to 0-6 after dropping games to Kinston and Plymouth — both losses by a combined 15 points.

Southside opened 1-A Coastal Plains Conference competition with a tough, televised test against reigning champion East Carteret. The Seahawks were held off the scoreboard en route to a sluggish start in the league.

Northside hosted a then-winless North Pitt club for homecoming on Friday. A pair of quick scores to open the second half put the home side behind by two possessions en route to its second loss of the campaign.

Each team had a number of standouts, though. Building on the positives and reviewing tape to correct the negatives will be the key to making sure a hiccup doesn’t turn into anything bigger.

Here are this week’s top performers from the county:

 

RHYS ALLIGOOD

Northside went to war with a bigger and stronger frontline from 2-A North Pitt. The visitors’ offensive line sliced and diced Northside’s defensive front, and the hosting Panthers failed to get much penetration throughout the evening.

Other than defensive end Rhys Alligood, that is. Alligood found himself in the backfield on multiple occasions. Whether it was a handful of tackles for loss or hurrying Nytrell Chapman, Alligood was as about as effective as an individual player can be.

FREDERICK HOLSCHER

Washington came as close as it has all season to its first win. Junior quarterback Frederick Holscher had a lot to do with that as he threw for his first touchdown of the season — a 19-yard pass to receiver Matt Black.

The two connected on 5-of-6 passes for 74 yards and that score. Holscher continues to evolve into a more-than-capable quarterback, and Black should gain confidence from the outing. It could add a different dynamic to the Pam Pack’s largely ground-based offense.

CODY MODLIN

Much like Matt Black with the Pam Pack, Cody Modlin emerged as a new threat for Southside in its loss to East Carteret this week. The Seahawks also stick to the ground much more often than not, but made some plays through the air when the clock was against them.

Modlin caught three passes from quarterback Marshall Medlock for 32 yards. Medlock has shown his ability to throw to the likes of running back Zikijah Crawford, but hasn’t had too many true receivers to target.
