CHOCOWINITY — There’s a new place for nightlife in Chocowinity.

The V.I.P. Club, off of U.S. Highway 17, is no more, and settling in its place is the new J.W.’s, headed up by Stokes resident Jimmy Wayne Harris.

In years past, the nightspot had a bad reputation due to fights and other criminal activity, but that’s what Harris is looking to turn around.

“That’s what I’m trying to get away from,” Harris said. “It’s working, but it’s slow.”

Harris took over the establishment in January and officially changed its name this summer, but J.W.’s is still working to build a new clientele.

One of the most successful nights at the club so far is shag night, when residents of Cypress Landing come out to show their moves and invite friends from surrounding areas.

Ronnie Lott, a Cypress Landing resident, is embracing the change at the club under new management, and likes to join in the shag dancing.

“I love to dance,” Lott said. “It’s a very nice group of people.”

On shag night, visitors can expect to see the experts and newcomers alike on the dance floor, enjoying couples’ shagging or learning new line dances. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, guests enjoy a beer or two and DJ Bill Drumheller keeps the music playing.

“I think this is great because it’s 10 minutes away from where we live,” Lott said. “I hope it continues every Thursday night. It’s a nice night out.”

As Harris continues to make his vision a reality, he is planning to build relationships within the community and keep inviting bands to play live music. J.W.’s has already hosted Big River Band, Side Project and the Eli Craig Band, to name a few.

In his mind, Harris said he envisions a fun atmosphere with a new image, where guests can enjoy socializing and have a couple of drinks, before heading home for the night.

“I enjoy watching people come in and have a good time,” he said.
