HYDE COUNTY — Voters in Hyde County have a straightforward election ahead of them Tuesday, with only one contested seat at the local level.

Along with the national- and state-level elections, voters will have to choose between Democratic newcomer Brownie Futrell or incumbent Republican Bill Cook for the District 1 seat in the North Carolina Senate. Democratic candidate Warren Judge and Republican Beverly Boswell are also facing off for the District 6 seat in the N.C. House of Representatives.

Hyde County Board of Education members are not up for election this year, as in Beaufort County, but candidates for the Hyde County Board of Commissioners, the Soil and Water Conservation District and area sanitary districts will be on the ballot.

Commissioner Benjamin Simmons III is seeking re-election, uncontested, this year for the Fairfield Township seat and newcomer Thomas Pahl is also uncontested in his vying for the Ocracoke Township seat.

The sole contested seat up for election on the Board of Commissioners is that of the Lake Landing Township, in which incumbent Commissioner Earl D. Pugh Jr. is facing Thomas Midgette.

Commissioners representing the Swan Quarter and Currituck townships are not up for reelection in 2016.

In the county’s three sanitary districts, Wayne Hodges is uncontested in the race to represent Swan Quarter Sanitary District, Engelhard Sanitary District Chairman R.S. Tony Spencer and Vice Chair Brandon Marshall are uncontested for re-election to their two open seats, and Regina O. Boor and Scott Bradley are uncontested for the two seats in the Ocracoke Sanitary District race.

Rounding out the local-level elections is Darren Armstrong, yet another uncontested candidate for the soil and water district seat.

Hyde County voters will mark one of four different ballots Tuesday, differing based on sanitary districts.

Elections Office Director Viola Williams said the elections process has run smoothly during this cycle. Polls open Tuesday at 6:30 a.m. and close at 7:30 p.m.
