The Washington (evening) Rotary Club held its weekly meeting Thursday at the Washington Yacht & Country Club.

After a social period in the Upper Deck, members assembled in the Pamlico Room, where club President Dr. David McLawhorn convened the meeting.

Bill Wall led in the Pledge of Allegiance, Bartow Houston in the singing of “My Country ’tis of Thee,” and Captain Bruce Rabon, of Salvation Army, offered an invocation.

Rocky Jacobs gave the health and happiness report.

Following the meal program, Chairman Sandy Mitchell introduced the guest speaker, Mr. Mark C. Tomlinson, CmfgE, a former executive director and CEO of SME, based in Dearborn, Michigan.

Mr. Tomlinson has a rich background in manufacturing engineering. He is currently involved in numerous professional and civic organizations, especially the local unit of the Salvation Army.

The speaker gave an oral and visual presentation of his experience hiking the High Sierra John Muir Trail, from Yosemite Valley to Mount Whitney. In this 30-day venture, he told of the arduousness of the endeavor and of both the ruggedness of the terrain, as well as the breathtaking scenery which included precipitously high-elevation vistas.

Following his well-received presentation, Mr. Tomlinson answered club members’ questions.  President McLawhorn then presented him with the highly coveted Rotary pen.

Members recited the Rotary Four-Way Test, then President McLawhorn adjourned the meeting with the reminder of each person’s part in “Rotary Serving Humanity,” the organization’s theme for 2016-17.
