It may be of little consequence to Democrats, nationally, who are still disappointed they didn’t put the first woman in the White House.

Yet locally, the men of the Bunyan Ruritan Club eliminated a gender barrier, making their own mark on history.

The service organization inducted its first female member in November. Serena Renee Sullivan is now a Ruritan.

This group has been active in the community for decades. From pancake suppers to chicken plates, every dime it makes pours back into local missions and serves families in need. The humble efforts are simple, yet strong, and a staple of Beaufort County.

Since the beginning, women have been a part of the philanthropy.

“Our wives and daughters keep us men in line. They have always been a force in Ruritan activities. With Serena joining us, it just becomes more official,” said Carl Alligood, Bunyan Ruritan secretary.

Sullivan is leading the way, as the charter will soon add two more women to its roster of Ruritans.

“Everyone is welcome. We work hard to give back, but there’s a lot of fun and fellowship every time we come together to serve others,” said Carl Smith, the Ruritans’ longest legacy member.
