Those with a song in their heart — a Broadway song — are invited to bring that song to the Turnage Theatre to audition for an all-about-love musical revue.

From 6-8 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, Arts of the Pamlico is holding auditions for “Love on Broadway,” a performance slated for February, in which soloists, groups, choirs, instrumentalists and dancers will perform Broadway songs with one thing in common: love, according to AOP’s Crystal Holman, the event’s coordinator.

“It could be from classic shows; it could be current shows — the only thing we require is that it is has something to do with love,” Holman laughed.

But song selections are not limited to traditional notions of love, Holman said. Songs about romantic love, love of self, food, money, friends, even hatred of love, are all up for grabs, and every genre from big ballads to rap — a feature of the current hit show “Hamilton” — are welcome, she said.

“No matter what kind of music you sing or genre you perform, there is a Broadway song that will fit you,” Holman said. “We want to get as many genres of music (as possible) covered in this revue in February.”

Holman has long been involved in community theater, and with its recent rebirth at the Turnage, a music revue is the next logical step on the way to producing a full-blown musical, she said.

“Washington has always had a huge interest in musicals, whether it be at Washington High School or in community theater,” Holman said. “It’s been a while since we put together a musical.”

Now that AOP’s community theater has staged several well-received comedies, organizers are looking at music.

“We’re spreading our wings, bringing in people who may not want to do the acting thing,” Holman said. “We want to embrace it all and invite everybody in and let them be a part of it.”

Anyone can attend the auditions, including musicians who like to offer their services as accompanists during the February performance.

“If anyone is interested in that in the community, come to the auditions and let me know. I would prefer live music to recorded music, but we can do both,” she said.

There will be no accompanist for the auditions, but performers can bring CDs with tracks. A piano also will be onstage for performers’ use.

“They can sing a cappella, too,” Holman said. “You know, some of these songs will be beautiful sung a cappella.”

Those who would like to sing some songs about love, but don’t necessarily want to be in the spotlight are still welcome, according to Holman.

“There will also be a couple of ensemble numbers, so if they don’t want to perform by themselves … just come and let your interest be known,” she said.
