The folks at Down on Mainstreet and Raised in a Barn Farm joined forces to arrange a fundraising event to help pay medical expenses for a 4-year-old boy suffering from lymphoblastic lymphoma, a non-Hodgkins lymphoma.

The event takes place from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at Raised in a Barn Farm in Chocowinity.

Mason Overton, the son of Thomas and Brookes Overton, was diagnosed last month with the blood cancer. Last week, Mason had emergency surgery to repair a hole in his duodenum.

Katie Pickens and Miranda Harrell, who work with Brookes Overton at Down on Mainstreet, worked with Raised in a Barn to organize the fundraiser. “We’re doing like a Christmas-themed festival. … We’re selling plates from King Chicken. We’re doing a silent auction. We’ve got some really awesome donations from around town. I’m pretty shocked with the amount of big items we’ve gotten,” Harrell said.

“We’re surprised at the generosity,” Pickens said.

“All the stores around town have been very kind. So, that silent auction should be pretty successful, because like I said, we’ve got some really good stuff,” Harrell said.

“We’re also doing a raffle,” Pickens said. “We are raffling off some of those items.” The five items in the raffle are a Yeti cooler, a $100 gift certificate for Food Lion, a full-car window tint package, an animated Santa Claus from Lowe’s and $45 gift certificate and a scarf from Pink Buoy. Raffle tickets are $5 each.

Wind & Design will be selling prints of an 11-inch-by-14-inch snowman painting for $25 each to benefit Mason, according to Pickens.

The event also includes live music, a live cake auction, photos with Santa Claus, sales of different styles of bracelets related to Mason’s illness and, possibly, T-shirt sales (if the T-shirts are printed and arrive in time) and sales of Christmas ornaments made by area churches.

“We are pre-selling tickets for the food,” Harrell said. “It’s a King Chicken plate with two pieces of fried chicken, green beans, boiled potatoes and hushpuppies for $8 (each). The deadline is Friday at 2 p.m.” Tickets for the food plates may be purchased at Down on Mainstreet, NautiLife, Marabella in Washington and from Down on Mainstreet employees. Brookes Overton’s co-workers want the fundraiser to help ease the burden on the Overton family. “We just want her to be able to concentrate on (Mason’s) health and not worry about bills or ‘When am I going to have to go back to work?’ We want her to just concentrate on getting Mason healthy,” Harrell said.
