The School Report Card released in November by the state Department of Public Instruction shows student testing results, and it grades each school across North Carolina.

Dr. Jana Rawls, personnel, testing and transportation director for Tyrrell County Public Schools, furnished the data and descriptions below on how local schools measured up in testing last spring compared with a year earlier.

Shown below are scores for Columbia Early College High School, Columbia Middle School, and Tyrrell Elementary School, with the 2015-16 academic year first and then for 2014-15.

Achievement is the indicator to show if students are on or above grade level. CECHS: 65, 68. CMS: 49, 36. TES: 49, 50.

Growth scores indicate whether students made one year of educational gain for one year of instruction. CECHS: 87.6, 91.3. CMS: 67.2, 73.3. TES: 76.3, 80.8.

DPI calculated the numbers above into a formula to get a school Performance grade, with Achievement at 80 percent and Growth at 20 percent. “They factor in things like number of days a student has been in school and whether there is a pre test in which to compare, so it can’t be hand calculated,” Rawls explained. The Performance grades were CECHS: 70, 73. CMS: 53, 43. TES: 55, 56.

The numerical grades were also assigned letter grades based on the following formula: A=85-100, B=70-84, C=55-69, D=40-54, and F=below 40. The results were CECHS: B, B. CMS: D, D. TES: C, C.
