NORTHSIDE 41, BEAR GRASS 17

PINETOWN — Northside opened 1-A Coastal Plains Conference competition on Friday at home. The Lady Panthers got off to a hot start in league play by rolling over Bear Grass, 41-17.

Rachel Lang led Northside in scoring with 14 points. She had multiple baskets in three of four quarters. The Lady Panthers were able to score 11 points in each of the first two periods, giving them a 22-8 lead at halftime.

The offense slowed down a bit to start the second half, but Northside was able to keep Bear Grass from scoring in double figures in each quarter.

Northside will be off until the New Year when it hosts East Carteret on Jan. 4.

LEJEUNE 92, SOUTHSIDE 64

CHOCOWINITY — Southside only mustered seven points in its first eight minutes of the basketball season, but settled in to score 57 in the final three quarters. The Seahawks, however, were lacking on the defensive end as Lejeune steamrolled them, 92-64.

Dajour Cratch led the Seahawks with 20 points. Demetrius Ebron was the only other player on the team to score in double digits.

Karree Smith and Malachi Borders each scored in double figures for the Devil Pups. They used a balanced scoring output to top Southside.

A long football season forced the Seahawks to open the season late and against a conference opponent. They’ll look to get back on track Monday in the Northside Holiday Tournament.

Precious Gaynor shoots a free throw during a game last season. Gaynor led the Lady Seahawks in scoring, and the offense looked good. Southside couldn’t get the defense it needed to stop Lejeune, though.

LEJEUNE 68, SOUTHSIDE 48

CHOCOWINITY — Like the boys, Southside’s girls’ basketball team showed no signs of an offensive lag to start the season. The defense, however, couldn’t slow down visiting Lejeune, which handed the Lady Seahawks a 68-48 loss in their season opener.

Precious Gaynor scored a team-best 13 points for the Lady Seahawks. She was able to knock down a pair of 3-pointers, which should be promising for the offense.

After only scoring 15 points in the first half, Southside’s offense whipped into shape with 14 in the third quarter and 19 in the fourth. Lejeune, however, had doubled down on the Lady Seahawks, 30-15, at halftime. The Lady Devil Pups scored 23 in the final eight minutes to punctuate the win.

Southside will look to bounce back in a post-Christmas tournament at South Creek.
