The Tyrrell County Board of Commissioners on Dec. 6 budgeted $110,930 to replace the bulkhead in Scuppernong Park.

The park, originally known as Veterans Park, is on the west bank of Scuppernong River, opposite Columbia’s Town Common. The park is accessible by water and the Scuppernong River bridge walkway.

The ordinance calls for replacing the 20-year-old timber bulkhead that protects the park’s shoreline on three sides with 570 feet of vinyl bulkhead.

Materials cost is estimated at $63,630, labor at $37,400, permit and design fees at $8,650, and local administrative cost at $1,250, the latter to be an in-kind contribution.

Money to pay the bills will come from the Public Beach and Coastal Waterfront Access Program grant, $99,830; local cash contribution, $8,650; and local in-kind contribution, $2,450.

On motion by Commissioner Tommy Everett, the ordinance was adopted unanimously.

Construction is expected to begin next spring, county manager David Clegg said Dec. 15.
