Authorities responded to N.C. Highway 171 after a logging truck crashed into a ditch around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Johnny Williams, with Washington Fire-Rescue-EMS, said authorities estimated there to be around 100 gallons of diesel fuel that spilled in the ditch after the crash.

Washington Fire-Rescue-EMS, Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office, N.C. State Highway Patrol and Old Ford Volunteer Fire Department responded to the scene.

Williams said the driver of the truck, which is owned by the Williamston-based Lilley Idealease Inc., was transported to Vidant Beaufort Hospital. No other vehicles or passengers were involved in the crash.

A similar accident happened on Dec. 19 just up the road on N.C. 171. Williams said crews were on the scene of that crash cleaning up for about five hours, but he didn’t think Tuesday’s cleanup would take as long.

Authorities closed one lane following the accident but temporarily closed both lanes around 5:15 p.m.

Williams said the cause of the accident is still under investigation. There is no word on whether the driver will face charges.
