Mrs. Rose was born in Beaufort County on November 7, 1918, to the late Romulus Elijah Cooper and Livvie Liverman Cooper. On December 21, 1935 she married the love of her life, Marvin R. Rose, who preceded her in death, March 5, 2012. They were married 76 years.
Mrs. Rose was a homemaker and caregiver by nature. Even before their marriage it was understood that she would continue to care for her mother and with his support, she cared for her mother, father, mother-in-law and disabled aunt for many years.
Mrs. Rose loved to fellowship with family, her brothers and sisters in Christ and friends met in the Ruritan Club. It was a given that family would gather at her house on holidays for a feast and preferably all at one time. It did not matter that some of us would eat three times on Christmas day; you ate when you got to her house and the rest of us better leave pecan pie, blueberry cobbler and fig preserves for everyone.
Mrs. Rose enjoyed opening her home to young men and women in ministry from Roanoke Bible College (MACU) and evangelists holding revivals at Wenona Church of Christ.
She especially loved everyone living and those who grew up on our “little corner” and her Christian family at Wenona Church of Christ.
Mrs. Rose had a remarkable memory, even until her passing. Most important to her was that she could still quote scripture from memory and tell us where to look for passages in the Bible. She instilled in every generation of her family the importance of knowing and serving her Lord Jesus Christ.
In addition to her husband, Marvin Royal Rose, Mrs. Rose was preceded in death by her beloved daughter, Wanda R. McCants and husband William “Bill” McCants; her brothers Roswell Cooper and Julius Cooper.
Mrs. Rose is survived by her cherished son, Charles E. Rose and wife, Patsy B. Rose; beloved daughter Marianna R. Phelps and husband, Allen; grandchildren, Jennifer M. Borgaila (Dave), David F. McCants (Bonnie), Sheila R. Phillips (R.A.), Latricia R. Porter (Barry), Charles “Ward” Rose Jr. (Tonja), Meredith P. Briley (Mitchell), Allison H. Phelps; great-grandchildren, Jordan Hudson-Borgaila, Sara Borgaila, Rosie Borgaila, Grace Borgaila, Will Borgaila, Janie McCants, Ella McCants, Zachary Phillips (Hannah), Orianna P. Boyd (Seth), Erica C. Askew (Eric), Cayman Belcher, Devin Porter, Jonathan Lewis (Kelsey), Charles “Chuck” Rose III, Chatham Briley, Emery Briley; great-great-grandchildren, Lea Askew, Mary Askew, Brynlee Belcher, Alana Belcher, Nature Petty, Aiden Phillips, Noah Lewis and Ella Lewis.
Charles and Marianna would like to thank Patsy and Allen for the love they expressed to our mother as we cared for her together. The family also wishes to thank the caregivers that mama loved so much and loved her in return.
