Salvation Army offers disaster training

The Washington Corps of the Salvation Army will offer a disaster training class on Jan. 28. Volunteers interested in receiving disaster response certification and the potential to deploy to national and international disaster sites are encouraged to participate. Interested volunteers need to create an online profile at www.disaster.salvationarmyusa.org and complete the volunteer application. The next step is to complete the online course “Introduction to the Salvation Army Emergency Disaster Services.”

Once you have received a passing grade, you can register for the class, which will start at 9 a.m. and conclude at 4:30 p.m. Lunch will be served at no cost to participants. The class will be held at the Corps’ headquarters located at 112 E. Seventh St. in Washington.

The Washington Corps of the Salvation Army began operation in 1938 and is assigned to meet the needs of residents in Beaufort, Hyde, Washington, Martin, Bertie and Tyrrell counties.

“We would really like to have trained responders in each of the counties we serve,” said Washington Corps Capt. Bruce Rabon.

All volunteers must complete a routine criminal background check before being approved for Salvation Army disaster service assignments. For more information or assistance with online registration, please contact the Salvation Army’s community relations chair Heidi Jernigan-Smith at 252-945-7891.
