Seahawks earn first win
CAMP LEJEUNE — John Bryant stole the ball and nailed a 3-pointer at the buzzer in overtime to give Southside its first win of the season, 69-66. Bryant had 16 points in the game. Demetrius Ebron led the way with 23.
The game embodied the strides Southside has made since opening the season. With little practice beforehand, it lost to the Devil Pups 92-64 back on Dec. 16.
The Seahawks poured in 20 points coming out of halftime to take a 51-43 lead into the fourth quarter. Lejeune’s defense hunkered down while the offense whittled away at the visitors’ advantage.
Southside had no time to celebrate its win as it got back on the road to travel to Bear Grass on Saturday. The Seahawks return home to host a potent Pamlico County club on Monday.
Lady Panthers pound Bear Grass
WILLIAMSTON — Northside scored 26 points in the second half to close out a 48-29 win at Bear Grass on Friday. Abby Mooring had a pair of baskets in each of the latter two quarters.
Brooklyn Hudnell led the Lady Panthers with 10 points. Gabby Slade and Rachel Lang each had nine to go with Mooring’s eight.
Northside’s defense kept Bear Grass’ offense quiet as it mustered just 10 points in the first half. The Lady Panthers travel to East Carteret on Monday.
Terra Ceia decimates Northeast Academy
LASKER — Terra Ceia earned its 20th win of the season in a 97-29 slaughtering of Northeast Academy on Friday. The Knights poured in 55 points in the first half and held their hosts to 20.
Shaiquan Moore (25 points/14 rebounds), Messiah Barnes (25 points/10 steals), Tyler Hendrix (11 points/10 rebounds) each had double-doubles in the win. As a team, Terra Ceia shot 53 percent from the field.
Lady Seahawks grounded at Lejeune
CAMP LEJEUNE — Southside kept up with Lejeune in the second half, but ultimately fell to its league foe, 73-61. The Lady Devil Pups only outscored their visitors by two in the latter 16 minutes, but were good enough in the first half to preserve their No. 3 spot in the 1-A Coastal Plains Conference.
Michaela Dixon was a presence in the post throughout. She led the Lady Seahawks with 17. Symone Ruffin had 13, and Danielle Ruffin knocked down a trio of 3-pointers.
Lejeune’s 15 points in the first were the fewest it scored in any period. Southside moved on to Bear Grass on Saturday before coming home to host top-ranked Pamlico County on Monday.
Northside coasts past Bear Grass
WILLIAMSTON — Rashod Smith, who recently returned from injury, scored 20 points for Northside, and Atia Shamseldin added another 18 as Northside cruised to a win at Bear Grass on Friday.
The Panthers continue to climb the 1-A Coastal Plains Conference standings, but will run into a stout East Carteret team on Monday.
