Crews respond to backyard fire in Washington

Around 3 p.m. Tuesday, fire crews responded to a call about a fully engulfed barn on Maple Lane in Washington. The property owner, Alton Windley, said he was burning trash and thought the flames were under control, but the small, backyard building caught on fire and spread to some surrounding trees. Washington Fire-Rescue-EMS and Clark’s Neck Fire Department responded. Firefighters said the Windleys were lucky, as the heat was already starting to spread to the home when they arrived. The structure was a total loss, but crews had it under control in less than a half hour. No one was injured.
