IN MEMORY: About 35 people gathered at Gate 1 at East Carolina University’s Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium on Thursday to commemorate the life of Washington resident Lewis E. Woolard. Woolard fell to his death in 1962 while working on the stadium’s construction. A plaque was erected to honor his service from almost 55 years ago. It is only the second plaque of its kind erected at the stadium. (Ashley Vansant/Daily News)
