ENGELHARD — Several months after starting to host classes at the Davis Center in Engelhard, Beaufort County Community College remains positive about this expansion of services.

Since September, BCCC has held an EMT certification class, CPR class, Microsoft Excel seminar and Windows 7 course at the Davis Center, as well as high school equivalency classes starting in January, according to a press release.

“Class participation rates have been comparable to that of classes on the main campus in Washington,” the release states. “The Davis Center offers seated classes that until now have only been available to students at the main campus in Washington or the Washington County Center in Roper.”

Stacey Gerard, vice president of continuing education at BCCC, said having these classes in Engelhard gives residents an opportunity to expand their knowledge more easily.

“The Hyde County Davis Center provides an opportunity to further educational opportunities to Hyde County residents in their home county. The increased presence of BCCC provides added opportunities for small business and economic growth,” Gerard wrote in an email.

BCCC also hired Georgia Ballance as the Hyde County coordinator in January, and Gerard said Ballance has since been an important resource for networking with potential students.

“Hyde County residents have embraced and supported BCCC by attending classes and networking with our Coordinator,” she wrote.

According to the press release, BCCC is already planning a new slew of courses for the Davis Center: Android workshop, iPhone/iPad workshop, several small business seminars and summer enrichment programs for K-12 students.

Gerard said the main priority for the near future is to add on instructors, including a nurse aide instructor, K-12 summer enrichment instructors and a Human Resource Development Day instructor for Hyde Correctional Institution.

“BCCC is excited to have the opportunity to increase offerings at the Hyde County Davis Center,” she wrote.
