Southside improves to 3-0

COLUMBIA — Southside scored runs in every inning but the third and fifth en route to a 13-1 win over Columbia on Monday. The Seahawks’ defense, meanwhile, held the Wildcats to just one run to help the team earn its third win in as many tries.

Will Warren was 4-for-5 at the plate with a run and two RBI. Hunter Sparks and Marshall Medlock each batted in three runs, and Sparks scored a pair himself. Josh Toler and Demetrius Ebron each had a pair of hits, too.

Medlock and Warren combined to scatter six hits. Medlock fanned six over five innings while only walking one Columbia batter. Warren tossed two frames, giving up a run on two hits.

Lady Seahawks blank Columbia to stay perfect

COLUMBIA — Southside scored in each frame of Monday’s 13-0 shutout of Columbia. It got six runs in the fifth to force an early conclusion to the game, improving to 3-0 in the process.

Alyssa McLawhorn, Maggie Craig and Gracie Warren each had a pair of hits for the Lady Seahawks. Craig led the game with four runs scored, and three runs came off Warren’s bat.

McLawhorn threw five scoreless frames in the win. She didn’t issue any walks, and pitched to contact. She only had two strikeouts on 16 batters faced. With just one error, the defense behind her was nearly flawless.

Knights open season with win

AHOSKIE — Terra Ceia began its three-game, season-opening road swing with a 5-0 win over Tarheel Independent Conference foe Ridgecroft. Johannes Van Essendelft went 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs and an RBI, and Austin Roscoe pitched a no hitter.

Roscoe also had a pair of hits. He and Darius Blackledge were aggressive on the bases as they combined to go 5-for-5 on stolen-base attempts.

Terra Ceia struck early with a run in the top of the first. Roscoe was masterful on the mound with the marginal advantage, and the Knights added to it with three runs between the fourth and fifth innings. They put the Rams away with another score in the seventh.

Terra Ceia travels to Northeast Academy on Thursday, then to TEACH on Monday before Wednesday’s home opener against Lawrence Academy.
