Seven different players scored for Washington in a 9-0 rout of soon-to-be conference opponent Greene Central. The game marked a return to form for the Lady Pack after letting one get away at Edenton, 3-2, on Friday.

The dominant showing also gave Washington valuable momentum as it gets into the crux of its 2-A Eastern Plains Conference schedule. The Lady Pack plays at Beddingfield on Tuesday. After returning home to host Southwest Edgecombe on Thursday, it will play its next five in a row on the road — three of which will be against league opponents.

“We’ve been missing some shots that we should have (made), but it’s coming along,” coach Ed Rodriguez said of the ever-improving finishing touch throughout the team. “It’s a 23-game regular season. That’s how we’ll approach it.”

After eight minutes of admirable defense from the visiting Lady Rams, Anna Frisbie broke through with a goal in the ninth minute. That seemed to open the floodgates for the Lady Pack. Sydney Edwards scored twice in two minutes. She picked off a Greene Central defender and launched the ball into the top-right corner of the net for her first goal. She found twine again after working her way through the back line and beating a diving goalkeeper.

Sydney Walker found herself in alone in the 17th minute to give Washington a 4-0 lead. Mackenzie Seiler then chipped the ball right between the keeper’s legs two minutes later.

 

Seiler nearly doubled down four minutes later, but was tripped up just outside the penalty area as she tried to break through Greene Central’s backline. She drew a close-range free kick, which Sarah Whitson was able to put in the back of the net.

“We’re doing well with those this year. We’ve hit, I think, 3-of-4 that we should hit,” Rodriguez said. “We haven’t done much with them in the last week because it was cold outside, but in the past we’ve worked especially on direct kicks.”

 

Jordan Prescott won a footrace late in the first half to net Washington’s sixth goal of the 40-minute period. She added another 10 minutes into the second. Vanessa Celis finished the Lady Rams off when she buried one during a scrum following a corner kick.

After building a sizeable lead quickly, Rodriguez opted for a more possession-central approach. The Lady Pack was able to move the ball around well, dropping it back as far as keeper Julissa Perez when needed. The girls patiently moved down the field and, when Rodriguez called for them to attack, they were able to net the last two goals in a seven-minute span.

“We just wanted to build teamwork,” Rodriguez said. “Our team is a slow starter. A lot of these girls don’t play all year long. Just get them touches against anyone else besides their own teammates. We’re just trying to build the team now.”
