FARMVILLE — Washington won its second game in a row in a tight pitching duel by the score of 2-1 over the Farmville Central Jaguars in extra innings. The name of this game for both teams was pitching. Hitting was scarce in this tense contest.
Senior Tripp Barfield toed the rubber and pitched seven strong innings. However, he reached his pitch count at the end of the seventh inning with the score tied 1-1 and yielded to junior Chris Sulc in the eighth.
The Pam Pack was able to push across one run in the top of the eighth inning and Sulc picked up the win with his one inning of work. For the night, Barfield gave up two hits, walked three, and struck out five Jag batters in seven full innings of no-decision work. The lone run scored on Barfield was unearned and occurred after a three-base error in left field and a wild pitch in the third inning. In his one frame, Sulc struck out two Jag batters to earn the win.
The Pack picked up only one hit on the night, which was a single by junior Frederick Holscher. The Pam Pack pushed across one run in the fourth when senior Logan Little walked, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, tagged on a fly ball to right, and scored on an error by the shortstop.
Washington scored the winning run in the top of the eighth when Little was hit by a pitch, moved up on walks to juniors Cooper Anderson and Drew Ferguson, and with two outs, scored when junior Carson Asby walked with the bases loaded.
The win improves Washington to 4-5. It will look to improve on its 1-0 start in the 2-A Eastern Plains Conference when Farmville Central visits on Friday.
