Council to receive update on $10K Main Street Grant

During its meeting today, the Washington City Council is scheduled to receive information regarding an art project in the city’s central business district.

Debra Torrence, executive director of Arts of the Pamlico, is expected to discuss a $10,000 Main Street Grant the arts council received to introduce art in the city’s downtown, according to a memorandum from City Manager Bobby Roberson to the mayor and council members. The purpose of Torrence’s presentation, according to the memorandum, is to outline activities completed thus far on implementing that project. Although the council is not required to take action on the project, Torrence will be prepared to answer questions from council members and the mayor, according to the memorandum.

Arts of the Pamlico has made a presentation about the project to the Historic Preservation Commission.

The $10,000 grant is part of the larger $94,340 grant the city received to enhance the city’s central business district. The money, awarded by the North Carolina Department of Commerce’s Division of Rural Economic Development, has been allocated this way: $10,000 to Arts of the Pamlico to provide downtown artwork; $30,000 for the city’s façade-improvement program for downtown; and $54,340 for streetscape, park improvements and possible Wi-Fi connections downtown, according to a city document. The City Council and/or the city’s Historic Preservation Commission would approve all design aspects of such projects.

In August, the City Council voted 4-1 to adopt the funding recommendations from a group that discussed how to spend the money. Before the Aug. 8 council meeting, Roberson met with group representatives — Arts of the Pamlico, Washington-Beaufort County Chamber of Commerce, Washington Tourism Development Authority — and city staff to develop a plan on how to spend the funds.

The council meets at 5:30 p.m. Monday in the Council Chambers in the Municipal Building, 102 E. Second St. To view the council’s agenda for a specific meeting, visit the city’s website at www.washingtonnc.gov, click “City Agendas.” Locate the appropriate agenda (by date) under the “Washington City Council” heading, then click on that specific agenda listing.
