Beaufort County’s baseball and softball teams are coming off of strong weeks. Washington baseball and softball each swept Farmville Central to start 2-A Eastern Plains Conference play with a pair of wins. Southside softball continued to build on its undefeated start to the season.

Northside baseball had arguably the most dominant week in the area. The Panthers won all three of their games by significant margins. The closest was a 9-4 victory at Lejeune.

Terra Ceia baseball also extended its undefeated start to four in a row by edging conference rival Pungo. Here are the area athletes that played substantial roles in the strong showings last week.

 

ZACH WOOLARD, NORTHSIDE

Northside picked up three wins in its three games last week. Five different pitchers went to work for the Panthers, but Zach Woolard proved to be the most effective.

Woolard pitched a complete-game shutout as Northside pounded Jones Senior, 8-0, for its fourth 1-A Coastal Plains Conference win. He struck out 14 batters and only faced 25. The Trojans threatened with a runner on third in the seventh, and while one run wouldn’t have affected the outcome, Woolard composed himself and got out of the inning.

 

CHRIS SULC, WASHINGTON

Washington opened 2-A Eastern Plains Conference competition by sweeping its home-and-home series with Farmville Central last week. Chris Sulc picked up a save and a win in his relief work in the two games.

Tripp Barfield pitched seven innings against the Jaguars last Tuesday before handing things over to Sulc, who was able to lock the Jags down after Washington took the lead in the top of the eighth. He again stymied Farmville Central’s bats as the Pam Pack came back to win a 6-5 nail biter on Friday.

 

MEGHAN MOORE, WASHINGTON

Washington cruised to a 13-0 win at Farmville Central last Tuesday, then returned home to complete the sweep with a 7-2 win on Friday. Meghan Moore’s consistent offensive production helped lead the Lady Pack to its first two 2-A Eastern Plains Conference wins.

Moore was the only player to notch multiple hits in each game. She scored twice and had three RBI when hitting was contagious in the 13-run game. When the Lady Jags were a little stingier, Moore chipped in two runs on two hits.

 

AUSTIN ROSCOE, TERRA CEIA

Terra Ceia didn’t show many signs of rust in a 4-3 win over Pungo last week. The Knights had to overcome a 10-day layoff, but Austin Roscoe’s all-around effort helped lead them to a win over their rival.

Roscoe relieved starting pitcher Tyler Hendrix. He allowed one run (none earned) on three hits, striking out seven and walking two batters over the final four frames. Offensively, he batted in two runs and scored one himself to account for three of the team’s four runs.
