FAIRFIELD — Hyde County Hotline can record another successful race in the books this year.

On Saturday, 26 racers gathered at the intersection of North Lake Road and N.C. Highway 94 near Lake Mattamuskeet for the third-annual Race Across the Lake to raise money for Hyde County Hotline, which helps victims of domestic violence in the county and seeks to eliminate this type of violence.

A 7-mile trail, the course took racers around the lake on mostly flat terrain for either a 5K run (3.1 miles) or a 10K run (6.2 miles).

“All participants gave great feedback and thoroughly enjoyed the course and event,” hotline advocate Rhonda Ballance wrote in an email.

This time around, Ballance wrote that organizers tweaked some little details of the race, such as the locations of water stations. Since its inception in 2015, Race Across the Lake has become an event to which participants look forward each year. The hotline it supports is the only such service for domestic violence victims in Hyde County.

According to Ballance, race organizers see the potential for growth in years to come, and they are hopeful the race will continue to be a successful event for the organization.

“The generous support we receive through these events, by participants, volunteers and citizens, helps us better serve victims and survivors of domestic abuse and sexual victimization in our communities of Hyde County,” Ballance wrote. “We are so grateful for all the support of our mission.”
