Washington’s waterfront is steeped in history, and its views are hard to beat.

A favorite spot for local residents and visitors alike, the waterfront bustles with activity during the mild, sunny days of spring.

For youngsters, the playground mere steps away from the waters of the Pamlico River offers old-fashioned entertainment in a perfect setting. Folks of all ages enjoy leisurely strolls along the waterfront and boardwalk, while joggers make good use of the same facilities.

Where ships once docked to load and unload cargo during the city’s shipping heyday, families now enjoy picnics and couples share one of several swings set up on the waterfront. Swinging while enjoying a cooling breeze and taking in the river views is a wonderful way to spend an afternoon.

WILDLIFE: Native birds and other wildlife make their home on the waterfront.

BOATING ON THE PAMLICO: Boaters take a leisurely ride near Castle Island, just off the Washington waterfront.
