Grading Out: Momentum continues to build thanks to local stars

There were some incredible individual feats this past week. Sydney Edwards had a pair of hat tricks to help Washington stay perfect in league action. Symone Ruffin was perfect at the plate through two games of a doubleheader.
It was a strong week for most local athletics. Those that have been hot largely remained hot, and those that needed to gain some traction did just that.
Here are this week’s standouts.
SYDNEY EDWARDS, WASHINGTON
Washington played three games in three days last week. It won all three — two of which were against 2-A Eastern Plains Conference opponents — by a combined 28-1.
Sydney Edwards’ playmaking and goal-scoring abilities played a significant role in the 3-0 week. The Lady Pack senior had two hat tricks and eight goals in the week. She also assisted three others. Edwards and Washington get a break from conference action when they take on Havelock and Northeastern this week.
DAHLTON O’NEAL, SOUTHSIDE
Southside righted the ship late last week by sweeping a doubleheader against Lejeune. Going in, the Seahawks had just one conference win in five tries. Dahlton O’Neal helped his team creep closer to .500.
O’Neal and the Seahawks rebounded from an early 2-0 deficit in the first game. In the second game, O’Neal scored twice and batted in three more runs as Southside erupted for 16 runs.
MATT MARSLENDER, NORTHSIDE
Northside kept rolling when it used an 11-run inning on Friday to beat East Carteret via the mercy rule. Matt Marslender, who coach Keith Boyd said has been struggling at the plate, got the party started.
Marslender got a leadoff base hit in the bottom of the fifth. It was the spark Northside needed to bat through the order without an out. Each player in the starting lineup scored a run.
SYMONE RUFFIN, SOUTHSIDE
Like their male counterparts, the Lady Seahawks were also able to sweep Lejeune to improve their standing in the 1-A Coastal Plains Conference. They blanked the Lady Devil Pups by a combined 28-0.
Symone Ruffin was a perfect 6-for-6 between the two contests. She scored thrice and batted in another run in a 12-0 win in the first game, then had a home run to help account for seven runs in a 16-0 win in the second matchup.
TRIPP BARFIELD, WASHINGTON
Tripp Barfield didn’t have a spectacular week at the plate, but his work on the mound was integral to Washington winning the front end of its home-and-home with Beddingfield.
Barfield threw a complete game at home. He struck out 11 batters while only conceding an unearned run on two hits. The win propelled the Pam Pack into its trip to Wilson on Friday, where it completed the sweep of the Bruins to preserve its perfect conference record.
