CHOCOWINITY — June Arnold has played piano since the age of 8.
She’s bringing her decades of talent and expertise to the public for a seventh consecutive year, as part of an hour-long piano performance Sunday at Chocowinity United Methodist Church.
Arnold’s performance will include a mixture of hymn arrangements and popular tunes — from “Can’t Help Falling in Love” and Elvis Presley’s “Starting Today,” to “Unchained Melody” and “Amazing Grace.”
To Arnold, music is not only an experience for the ears, but also for the mind and the soul. She views her talent as a type of spiritual ministry.
“For more than 60 years, an incredible worship and continuing Christian education experience,” Arnold wrote. “It can affect our minds, our emotions and our bodies. Learning to play a musical instrument seems to have the most benefit to the brain. During the musical learning and practice, the brain is working in many areas all at once.”
Arnold also wrote that music has been proven to lower blood pressure and other stress factors for performers and listeners.
She references 1 Samuel 16:23: “David would take his harp and play. Then relief would come to Saul.” Arnold thinks this verse is but one example of the power of music to bring peace.
“There are many other verses in the Bible on these topics,” she wrote. “(Music) positively carries over into other areas, such as cognitive and language development, creativity, behavior and more.”
The public is invited to be a part of a fun, relaxing afternoon performance. There is no cost to attend.
Chocowinity United Methodist Church is at 678 N.C. Highway 33 West in Chocowinity. June Arnold’s performance begins at 3 p.m. Sunday.
