Strong thunderstorms will pass through eastern North Carolina early Friday. The area is under a tornado watch until 1 p.m.

According to the latest forecasts, heavy thunderstorms begin around 9 a.m. Friday, and thunderstorms are expected to continue through the early afternoon.

Beaufort County Schools, Washington Montessori Public Charter School, Beaufort County Community College and Pungo Christian Academy are closed Friday. East Carolina University canceled its outdoor commencement ceremony.

Flash flooding is likely with these storms, and residents are urged to use caution and avoid traveling, if possible. A craft advisory is also in effect.

Residents living along creeks and streams should take precautions to protect life and property. If one encounters flooding on the roads, turn around instead of attempting to drive through it. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles.
