Swamp leather at Pocosin Lakes

Swamp leather (Clematis crispa) is an herbaceous (not woody) vine that only occurs in freshwater wetlands. It can be seen along the Scuppernong River Interpretive Boardwalk at Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge. Shown here is the swamp leather’s pointy immature seed.
