CHOCOWINITY — A burgundy PT Cruiser struck Aaron Moore in a hit-and-run collision on U.S. Highway 17 at 9:15 p.m. Tuesday, according to North Carolina State Highway Patrol officials.
Moore, a 22-year-old from Chocowinity, sustained injuries to the lower extremities and was taken to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, said 1st Sgt. Gary Brown. As of Wednesday afternoon, he was still in the hospital, he said.
Moore was out of his car and walking along the road under the U.S. Highway 17 bridge, 500 feet south of the Washington city limits.
Chocowinity EMS Capt. Shane Grier is unsure why Moore was outside of his vehicle, but said many drivers had stopped to watch fireworks.
The car was travelling about 45 mph when it hit Moore and continued north.
A hit-and-run is classified as a felony. Troopers are currently following leads but do not yet have a suspect.
