Mrs. Catherine Polovitch Smith, age 95, a resident of 2637 NC Hwy. 99 S., Belhaven, died Monday, July 17, 2017 at her home.

A graveside funeral will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 19, 2017 at the Smithton Cemetery, officiated by Rev. Burke Holland. Mrs. Smith’s grandsons: Fred Smith IV, Blake Smith, Cade Smith, Michael Smith, Brett Smith and Brandon Phelps will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be granddaughters: Nikki Klapp, Ashley Swain, Mallori Marshall and Codi Edwards.

The family will receive friends following the service and other times at the home.

Mrs. Smith was born in Wyoming County, PA on June 4, 1922, daughter of the late George and Catherine Polovitch. On June 18, 1946, she married Fred Warren Smith Jr. who preceded her in death on August 16, 1988. Her priority in her adult life was, along with her husband, providing for her family by cooking, gardening and assisting on the family farm. Mrs. Smith also worked outside of the home as a seamstress at Belhaven Manufacturing and Washington Garment Factory. She was a former member of the Belhaven chapter of the Eastern Star and a member of North Creek Primitive Baptist Church in Ransomville.

Survivors include two daughters: Anita S. Swain of Plymouth and Valla S. Phelps (Tim) of Windsor; two sons: Fred W. Smith III of Belhaven and Michael A. Smith Sr. (Deborah) of Belhaven; two sisters-in-law: Evelyn Polovitch of Nicholson, PA and Frances Martin (Tom) of Belhaven; ten grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren; and a special friend and caregiver Faye Smith. Mrs. Smith was predeceased by a son-in-law: Rick Swain; a daughter-in-law: Darlene Smith; four brothers: Mickey, Charlie, Mike and Steve Polovitch and two sisters: Mary Beinlich and Stella Henry.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Mrs. Smith’s caregivers: Becky Paul, Loria Artis, Alisha Hopkins, Kamesha Barrow, Community Home Care & Hospice and their employees.
