The Down East Seniors Club held its July 19 meeting at the Blind Center of North Carolina in Washington. President Stewart Rumley led the meeting. Chip Ide led the singing of “God Bless America” and Charles Smith gave the invocation. Ed Hamrick gave some factoids for the date in history and Dick Paul provided humor.

Mike Gwynn introduced Kelly Crisp as the speaker. Crisp and her husband are board members of the local Boys & Girls Club. The club is composed of children ages 6 to 18. The organization promotes academic success, healthy lifestyles and community involvement. The club gets 70 percent of its funding from local donations. It is open for children Mondays through Fridays. During the school year, the hours are from 3-6 p.m., and during the summer, they are all day. The first hour after school the children work on homework. They are fed a hot meal every day before going home. All of the high school seniors have graduated. There have been no teen pregnancies among the members.

Gwynn won the 50/50 drawing.
