Arts of the Pamlico is issuing a challenge to artists of all ages to turn the ugly into art.

The arts organization is asking for works of a unique sort: works of art composed of objects found in or along the Pamlico River. In return, is the chance to win cash awards for first place in five categories: 3D; group, consisting of five people or more working together on a project; mixed media; photography; under 18 years old youth division; and under 12 years old youth division.

The River Art Show started with a call to river-lovers and artists to participate in Sound Rivers’ biannual river cleanup, in which volunteers take to the water and the shoreline to pick up garbage that has found its way into the waterways. Arts of the Pamlico and Sound Rivers teamed up for the event, led by AOP volunteer Tina Jandrow. The intention was to have trash transformed into works of art for an exhibit at AOP’s Turnage Theatre.

Now, AOP is opening up the exhibit to any artist who lives, works or has visited eastern North Carolina. In addition to works being made of half river trash, other requirements include: a maximum of two works per artist; 3D or sculpted works must be no large than 8-feet high by 4-feet wide; wall displayed art must be framed or wired for hanging or mounting; 3D works must also be on a base that allows for it to be displayed as a free-standing work on the floor or on a pedestal. All works much be offered for sale, and could potentially be shared as public art displays throughout Beaufort County.

“Works will be juried at the reception visitors and during the month of September. Awards will be announced on Sept. 29, on the AOP website and Facebook page,” according to an AOP press release.

There is no entry fee for the River Art competition. For more information about the exhibit, visit www.artsofthepamlico.org.
