Mr. Jay “Garland” Jewell Jr., age 69, a resident of Washington, died Sunday, August 13, 2017 at Vidant Medical Center of Greenville.

A funeral service will be held 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 16, 2017 at Paul Funeral Home & Crematory of Washington, officiated by Pastor Thad Tankard. Honoring Mr. Jewell’s wishes, cremation will follow the service.

The family will receive friends 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 15, 2017 at Paul Funeral Home & Crematory of Washington and other times at the home.

Mr. Jewell was born October 14, 1947. He is the son of the late Jay Garland Jewell Sr. and Alma Whitley Jewell. He was known by his grandchildren as pappa. He was an avid hunter and enjoyed days of hunting with his hunting buddies. He worked at Motor Parts and Tidewater and later became self-employed. He retired in 2010.

His surviving family includes his wife: Linda Hardee Jewell; sons: Jay Garland Jewell III, wife Cindy Braddy Jewell of Pinetown and Scottie Lee Jewell of Greenville; two sisters: Patsy Jewell Johnson and husband Bruce and Brenda Jewell Woolard and husband Holton, both of Washington; five grandchildren: Jay Jewell IV and wife Kaelin, Zoe Leigh Jewell, Alexandria Kingsland Smith and husband Britian, Jamie Garrett Jewell and Jaden Quinn Jewell and two great-granddaughters: Jolie Harper Smith and Madilyne Gray Jewell.

He is preceded in death by his parents Jay and Alma Jewell, and two sisters Glenda Drew Jewell and Linda Lou Jewell.
