William Alexander Hagerty Jr.

William Alexander Hagerty of 105 Randalls Circle, Pinetown, passed away on June 30, 2011 from complications due to cancer after a two-year battle.
He was born in Ridley Park, Pa., and was a devout member of St. James Episcopal Church in Belhaven. He was the son of the late William Alexander Hagerty Sr. and Hetwig Fritz Hagerty. He served in the Naval Air Force. On April 24, 1954, he married the former Dorothy Bradshaw. He graduated from Drexel Institute with a Bachelor of Science in Commerce and Engineering. Bill’s career as a Product and Marketing Manager with Vickers, Inc. a division of Sperry Rand Corp. spanned more than 33 years. Bill worked alongside surgeons of Johns Hopkins Hospital responsible for developing a variable speed heart-lung machine. He became a Global Product Manager. He served as a delegate for Beaufort County as a Senior Tar Heel Legislature for 10 years. Bill was awarded the Governor’s Award for volunteerism in 2000. He was proud to be a member of the Bath Lions Club. His efforts in helping the elderly are extensive because he believed that, “we should take better care of our Senior Citizens”, was on the Beaufort County Regional Advisory Committee for the Mid-East Area Agency on Aging, Elder Fair, Pace Board Member, coordinated Meals on Wheels for Bath and accounted for distribution, and a member of Belhaven (BHM) Regional Library Board.
In addition to his wife, Dorothy of 57 years, he is survived by his children: Debra Hagerty Bailey, Nancy Hagerty LaBarge, Mark Alan Hagerty and Michael Patrick Hagerty; his grandchildren: Christopher, Brian, Aaron, Stephaine, Tiffany, William, Jessica, Rebecca, Hanna and Brittany; two great-grandchildren: Sabrinna and Robert and his brother: Robert Hagerty. He is preceded in death by his son, William Bradshaw Hagerty and sister, Ruth Ingrebretsen.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 3, 2011, at St. James Episcopal Church in Belhaven. The family will greet friends following the service at the church.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be given to St. James Episcopal Church in Belhaven.
