The Washington (evening) Rotary Club met Thursday at the Washington Yacht & Country Club.

After the traditional pre-meeting social period in the Upper Deck, members assembled in the Pamlico Room, where President Todd Williamson convened the meeting.

The Pledge of Allegiance was recited, a chorus of “God Bless America” was sung, and club chaplain Captain Bruce Rabon of the Salvation Army offered a prayer prior to the meal.

Following dinner, the Health & Happiness report was given by Bartow Houston. President Williamson then called upon program chairman Dr. Zeno Edwards III, who presented club member Bruce Rabon, who gave an outstanding overview of the mission and operation of our six-county Salvation Army command.

Captain Rabon explained the Salvation Army Emergency Disaster Services (EDS) program and how it seeks to provide physical, material, and emotional comfort in times of disaster.

Salvation Army personnel are trained and equipped to provide food, clothing, shelter or supplemental financial resources to those affected. This is done in coordination with local emergency management and other community disaster relief organizations.

Rabon noted that the Salvation Army is on the ground when disaster strikes, and also there during recovery. He cited numerous — some quite dramatic — examples of services rendered during recent natural disasters.

A question and answer time followed the speaker’s presentation.

Club members then recited Rotary’s Four-Way Test, after which President Williamson adjourned the meeting.
